  • Detailed Itinerary

    Day 1: Marrakech -> High Atlas Mountains → Tizi n Tichka Pass → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Kalaat M’gouna → Boumalne Dades

    This morning after breakfast we will meet you at your hotel or riad. From there we will drive over the scenic High Atlas Mountains, stopping as often as you wish for pictures. We will be following roads that were built over the camel trails used by caravans in ancient times to one of the most important stops they made – the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. This village has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site as an example of traditional Berber (Amazigh) architecture. Several movies including Gladiator have been filmed at this location, so if it looks familiar, that’s probably why. The next stop will be Ouarzazate, the Hollywood of Morocco and home to Atlas Film Studio. Soon after that we will be in Kalaat M’gouna, the city of Roses. This town is the center of the rose industry in Morocco. We will be able to stop at a shop where the owner will explain how the scent is extracted and made into various health and beauty products. After that, our last stop will be Boumalne Dades where we will find our hotel and rest for the night.

    Day 2: Boumalne Dades -> Todra Gorge → Erfoud → The Sahara Desert (Merzouga) → Luxury Campsite

    After breakfast at the hotel we will drive toward the desert. Our first stop of the day will be at Todra Gorge, one of the deepest canyons in the country. Walking along the river and looking up hundreds of meters to the top of the cliff walls is quite an experience! From there we will continue to drive out of the mountains and into land that looks more and more like the desert. We will pass many small, traditional villages and a few larger towns. By this time you will notice MANY date palms. Their deep roots can find the water far below the surface to produce some of the most amazing dates on the planet. When we reach the town of Erfoud you will see the first of many signs for fossils. The Sahara desert used to be the floor of an ancient sea, and the fossils left behind have become a source of income for many people. From this point, it will only be a few more minutes before you are in Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara, mounting a camel for a ride to the luxury campsite where you will enjoy a gorgeous sunset, a delicious dinner, some live traditional music around the campfire, and a peaceful night’s sleep.

    Day 3: Explore the Sahara

    We will spend today exploring the area around the Sahara and learning more about the culture there. After breakfast, our first stop will be a visit to Khamlia Village to hear a live performance of Gnawa (Gnaoa) music and some mint tea. This style of music goes back to ancient times and has been a strong influence on both the music coming local bands today and on American music like jazz and blues. We can also visit a nomadic Berber family in their tent to experience their way of life a bit more closely. There may also be time to shop at the local markets, if there is interest. In the afternoon, just before sunset, you will meet a camel who will carry you over the dunes of the Sahara to a luxury campsite where you will have dinner and spend the night. Your tent will be very much like a hotel room with beds, running water, and a private bathroom. You may want to take a little time as it get dark to step just outside the circle of tents and look up at the stars. Without bright city lights, they will number in the millions – unless there is a bright, full moon.

    Day 4: Sahara -> Errachidia → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Azrou Forest → Ifrane → Fes

    After breakfast we will trek out of the Sahara and begin our tour north to Errachidia then Midelt. We’ll drive alongside what seems to be a spectacular and endless river of palm trees in Ziz Valley, stopping for pictures and stretch breaks along the way. After lunch we will continue to Azrou Forest where, if we’re lucky, we will see some Barbary Macaques. It’s just a short drive from there to Ifrane, the “Switzerland of Morocco.” After some pictures, we will drive to Fes. We will drop you off at your riad or hotel.
