  • Detailed Itinerary

    Day 1: Fes -> Ifrane -> Azrou Forest -> Zaida -> Midelt -> Merzouga

    We will pick you up early on the first day and drive toward the town of Ifrane, the “Switzerland of Morocco.” You will notice the similarities in the houses - the rooves are pitched because this area gets snow in the winter. We will continue to the cedar forests of Azrou where we will stop to visit the wild Barbary macaques. (They are friendly, but not tame. Be careful!) After some pictures, we will continue to the Berber village of Zaida for lunch. We will drive through the Middle Atlas Mountains, along Ziz Valley, to towns like Midelt and Imilchil before we arrive in the desert. When you get there, you will trade the car for a camel for a trek over the sand dunes to the luxury camp where you will enjoy a traditional dinner and spend the night.

    Day 2: Merzouga → Erfoud → Todra Gorge → Boumalne Dades

    Early risers today will be treated to a gorgeous sunrise over the sand dunes. It’s truly special to see how the light changes the color of the sand. When you have seen enough, there will be a traditional breakfast waiting for you in the dining tent. Afterwards, you will ride out of the campsite, back to Merzouga, and we will begin our drive toward Boumalne Dades. The first place you’ll see is Erfoud, a city known for its date production and for its fossils which record that time in Earth’s history when this area was at the bottom of an ocean. We’ll continue to Todra Gorge, one of the deepest canyons in the country, to walk along the river and stretch. You may notice people sitting up on the walls, especially if it’s hot. Be sure to look up! Our last stop for the day will be Boumalne Dades. We’ll take a few minutes to look at a rock formation in the mountains called “monkey fingers” then check into our hotel for the night.

    Day 3: Boumalne Dades → Kalaat M’Gouna → Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou → High Atlas Mountains → Marrakech

    After a traditional breakfast, we will drive toward the High Atlas Mountains. Our first stop will be in Kalaat M’gouna, Morocco’s “Rose Valley,” where at least 4,000 tonnes of roses are grown and processed each year. After a visit to a shop to learn more about how the rose essence is extracted, we will drive to Ouarzazate, the movie capital of Morocco. There are several lots filled with old movie prompts and sets, and true movie fans might enjoy a visit to the Museum of Cinema. (Please let us know if that’s you!) Before we leave, we will visit Taourirt Kasbah which was built in the 19th century for one of Morocco’s most powerful families. It is an impressive example of traditional Amazigh (Berber) architecture - and a nice warm-up for the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, our next stop. Ait Ben Haddou is a 400+ year old UNESCO World Heritage site. The fortified citiy served as a secure stop for camel caravans carrying spices and other goods between the Sahara and Marrakech, and visiting is almost like stepping back in time. When we return to the present, we will drive into the High Atlas Mountains, through the infamous Tizi n Tichka pass, to Marrakech. We will stop for lunch, of course, and we will stop as often as you would like to take pictures. The mountain scenery is truly next-level! When we arrive in the city, we will drop you off at the hotel or riad of your choosing, or take you to Jemaa el Fna. (We will arrange those details with you when we plan your trip.)
